Or create your own file from scratch

For business cards, create a new file 3.58" x 2.4". For postcards create a new file 5.96" x 4.25".

Page sizes for other products can be found here.

How do I do this?

To create a new document in Word select File > New (Ctrl+N) and open a blank document.

To adjust the size of the document select File > Page Setup. For business cards set the size to 3.58" x 2.4" and for A6 postcards to 5.96" x 4.25". These dimensions include the bleed of 0.12" (8.5pt) for and business cards and 0.06" (4.2pt) for postcards.

Trim and text area

For business cards create guides 0.1" and 0.24" from each edge, and for postcards create guides 0.06" and 0.18" from each edge.

Margins Microsoft Word

After confirming your changes with OK a warning message will pop up. It will tell you that the margins are outside the printable area of the page. Press the Ignore button to get back to the document and start designing your card.

Message Microsoft Word

As Word only has one margin you have to add up the safety margin and the bleed. For business cards enter 0.24" for top, bottom, left and right margin. For postcards enter 0.18" for top, bottom, left and right margin.

You are now ready to create your design within this template.

Please note, nothing should extend to the outer edge of the document other than items that extend right to the edge of your cards, like a background color or all-over image for example. For more information on "bleed", please refer to our file preparation tutorial.

The first guide lines (0.1" for business cards or 0.06" for postcards) show where the cards will be cut. The inner guides (0.24" for business cards and 0.18" for postcards) show the 'safe' area for your design. You should try to keep your all your text and images within the inner guides to avoid the possibility of anything on your cards being 'clipped' when we cut them.

Very fine text, rules and keylines should be avoided.

If possible, your file should be created in CMYK color format to ensure the most accurate color reproduction. If available, this will be found in the 'more colors' part of your color pallette. We can accept RGB files, but there is a risk that some of the colors may not print exactly as they appear on your screen.

If you have an area of solid black within your document, 100% black (K) alone will not result in a solid, saturated black. Instead, please use Rich Black, as represented by C:100% / M:30% / Y:30% / K:100%.

Saving your artwork

To save the document in Word select File > Save As and save your artwork in .doc format.
